Traveling for extended periods is an exciting adventure, but managing home responsibilities while you’re on the road can feel overwhelming. Whether it's keeping up with bill payments, handling maintenance, or ensuring your home stays secure, you need strategies in place to balance it all. Over the years, I’ve fine-tuned some techniques to manage these responsibilities so I can focus more on the joys of travel without the constant worry about what’s happening back home.
One of the easiest ways to manage home-related tasks is to automate your finances. Set up automatic payments for recurring bills like rent or mortgage, utilities, insurance, and credit cards. Most banks offer autopay features that allow you to schedule payments, ensuring you don’t miss deadlines or incur late fees while you're away.
If you're managing multiple accounts, consider using a financial tracking app like Quicken Simplifi and YNAB (You Need A Budget) to monitor your expenses and see all your transactions in one place. These apps allow you to set budgets and keep tabs on your spending while you’re on the move, ensuring everything stays in order.
As you plan your retirement, envision a travel experience that’s more than a checklist. Slow travel invites you to explore new destinations at a leisurely pace, transforming each trip into a fulfilling adventure. It’s about embracing the journey and creating lasting memories without the rush.
Home maintenance issues like plumbing, roofing, or electrical problems can arise when you least expect them. To prevent any surprises, schedule routine maintenance before you leave. Check that everything from the HVAC system system to the water heater is in working order. If your home requires any seasonal maintenance, such as gutter cleaning or landscaping arrange for these services in advance or hire a reliable company to take care of it while you’re away.
Some homeowners even opt to get a home warranty, which can help cover unexpected repairs.
Use Technology for Security
With today’s smart home technologies, you can monitor and secure your home from anywhere in the world. Installing security cameras, smart locks, and doorbell cameras allows you to keep an eye on your property remotely. Systems like Ring or Nest can alert you if there’s any suspicious activity, and you can use smart locks to grant temporary access to trusted individuals, such as a neighbor or house sitter, if needed.
If you’re worried about packages piling up on your porch, services like Amazon Key allow delivery drivers to leave items inside your garage or home using smart locks. This can be especially helpful if you’re expecting important deliveries while you’re gone.
Forward Your Mail
When you’re away for an extended period, it’s important to ensure that your mail is being handled. The U.S. Postal Service offers mail forwarding services that will send your mail to your temporary address. If you don’t want physical mail following you around, you can sign up for a virtual mailbox service like Anytime Mailbox or iPostal1, which allows you to access your mail online. These services scan your mail and email you the contents, so you can stay on top of important documents without having to manage physical letters.
It’s always a good idea to have a trusted friend, family member, or neighbor who can be your backup person while you’re away. This person can be your go-to for anything unexpected, whether it’s an emergency repair, handling urgent deliveries, or checking on your house if there’s bad weather.
I always make sure my backup person has access to a key and knows where essential items, like insurance information or important documents, are located. Keep a list of emergency contacts (like plumbers, electricians, or your home insurance agent) readily available for them, so they can take action if needed.
Set Up Digital Reminders
With so many things to keep track of, it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks while traveling. Setting up digital reminders on your phone or calendar can help keep you organized. Reminders for things like bill due dates, maintenance check-ins, or any other home-related tasks can prevent you from forgetting important responsibilities while on the road.
Apps like Todoist or Google Keep allow you to create to-do lists and set reminders, so you can manage everything from routine tasks to one-off events.
Rent Out Your Home
If you’re traveling for an extended period, renting out your home might be a great option to help cover costs. Platforms like Airbnb or Vrbo make it easier than ever to rent your place to short-term renters. Not only will this generate income while you’re away, but having guests stay in your home can help deter potential break-ins and keep your home maintained.
Just make sure you have a solid rental agreement in place, and if you’re using a platform like Airbnb, read up on their host protection policies to ensure you’re covered in case of damages. You might also want to hire a property manager or cleaning service to help with the turnover between guests, especially if you won’t be nearby.
Traveling doesn’t mean you have to neglect your home responsibilities. With proper planning and a few smart strategies and with the help of an expert Travel Coach, you can ensure everything runs smoothly while you’re away. Whether it’s automating payments, hiring a house sitter, or using smart technology, you can enjoy your travels knowing your home is in good hands.
